The landscape of the Canadian Shield has been sculpted by a process called glaciation. During the last ice age, giant accumulations of ice carved out the bedrock creating most of our lakes. The ice carried the rock and debris away, called drift, and as the ice melted the drift was deposited all over the shield. This means millions of tons of drift ranging from particle size of clay to the size of a giant boulder are all mixed in together and shape most of our flat “inhabitable area”.

What does all this mean for the development of land? Well, it means that we need to contend with obtrusive boulders in almost every aspect of excavation. Whether you are digging for a roadway, foundation or trenching for service lines an obtrusive boulder will most certainly be found in the exact spot you need to dig. Here’s how boulder rock breaking works:

Since boulders have a little burden, we can use smaller bores, and smaller charges to break
the boulder into manageable pieces. Most times a boulder rock blasting requires a single charge, meaning we can drill, stem, and blast it within 20 minutes. Reducing the size of the rock can be done until the desired size is achieved. Our system is SAFER, FASTER, and can get you back to work IMMEDIATELY!
